Hiiragi Yuuki in the real world, a girl best described as quirky, energetic and always filled-to-the-brim with determination, had the misfortune of being the first to play her friend's copy of Sword Arte Online. What hope does a klutzy, air-headed teenage girl with little to no gaming experience have of surviving a ruthless virtual reality death game?Yuuki will symbolize courage within the story: the courage to carry on in the face of insurmountable odds, the courage to break from the norm and do the unexpected, the courage to always get up when knocked down
She will evolve from a boarder-line comic relief n00b to a front-line fighter that lives off the motto "with hardwork and guts, you can accomplish anything!~"
A bit of a departure from the original image of the character, but I think this will prove to be more entertaining and lead to a better story overall - her foil, and main romantic interest will be a more stoic, cynical, 'cool' character - think Kousaka Kyousuke, Kyon, or Hikigaya Hachiman.

Cool :)
ReplyDeleteHere is my honest opinion:
To me, the other take on the main character was more appealing. This type of energetic, moe-ish character is more trendy right now, and the stoic kind of male lead is even more typical. The guy aside though, I personally really liked the other character design, I was almost jealous of it :)
This one is good too though, and I'm sure either would be fine. This is merely my taste. Don't change back if you think this new character will be better though :)
Right on!
Write on~
OH I get it! This character is slightly inspired by Yui Yuigahama. Haha ^_^
ReplyDeleteSomewhat, yeah - the main inspiration came after I watched Diebuster, and was reminded of how much I like the 'naruto' type of protagonist, where they're objectively 'suck' or looked down upon, or always disadvantaged, but they always have the inner strength to pick themselves up and fight on and move those around them.
ReplyDeleteI was also reminded how fun a character like Minorin, or Arika from Mai Otome, or of course, Nono from Diebuster is - with their really super upbeat quirkiness, and simple determination (in the case of the latter two)
In the previous incarnation, the female protagonist would be the strong aggressive tsundere type, and her main love interest the 'shounen protagonist'. At first she wouldn't think much of him, and look down upon his childish optimism, but over time would come to see things as he does and be moved by his actions.
In this incarnation, its reversed, with the girl being the optimistic, carefree, easygoing one and her male lead as the cynical type. This time around, it would be he who's moved by her actions and grows to admire her for that.
Its a bit more 'in fashion' in terms of anime tropes and all that, but I think it also has potential for some good character dynamics. It also helps play to the main character being the inexperienced noob of the group, and allows the reader to learn the game/world through the main character learning as well.
Also, pulling from anime like Mai Otome, (and also kind of like Yahari as well) there'll be another girl character that's more 'cool' and put-together, who'll have a relationship with Yuuki, similar to Usagi and Rei (sailor moon and sailor mars) - Girl rival-friends, if you will.
However, even if this change does occur, the butterfly-like-hair-bow will live on! Almost certainly in another female character, so if anything, the personalities and designs will only be shifted around rather than removed or changed entirely~
